Luigi Simoni is supporting Napoli for the Scudetto, and says it’s “pointless” to discuss the penalty his Inter didn’t get against Juventus.

The Partenopei are only a point behind the Old Lady at the top of Serie A, with Juve facing Inter at San Siro in the Derby d’Italia on Saturday.

“Saturday is a very interesting game,” Simoni told Tuttomercatoweb.

“The Bianconeri need to make up for Sunday’s game, while Inter are a great team but really inconsistent in their performances.

“The Scudetto? It’s really difficult to make predictions right now, not many thought Juve would lose to the Neapolitans but [Maurizio] Sarri’s team deserved it, they controlled the game.

“Who am I supporting? Napoli. I played for them and coached them, winning a Coppa Italia and Serie B. It’s a nice city full of enthusiasm.”

Simoni’s Inter were also one point behind Juve with four games to go in 1997-98, but 20 years ago today they controversially lost a head-to-head clash at the Stadio Delle Alpi…

“At that moment I felt anger and I had some personal considerations which weren’t nice. But as time passes, what can you do?

“I carry Inter in my heart, with whom we finished second. I don’t think ever, in any circumstances, has a penalty been talked about so much.

“If people still haven’t understood it’s pointless to keep explaining.”
