Andriy Shevchenko will sign a two-year deal with Genoa and make his Serie A debut as a coach against José Mourinho’s Roma.
The former striker has been chosen by new Genoa owners 777 Partners to take over at the club.
Davide Ballardini will be sacked after a 2-2 draw away at Empoli on Friday.
Genoa are involved in the race for survival and have won just one of their 12 Serie A games. They have collected only nine points this season.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Shevchenko will be in Italy next week to sign a two-year deal with the Grifone.
The former Chelsea and Milan striker has been chosen to turn the situation around and give the team a new international appeal.
The 45-year-old, a former Ballon d’Or winner, is considered one the best strikers of his generation and has won one Serie A title and one Champions League with Milan.
Miami-based firm 777 Partners will complete the club’s takeover on Monday, November 15, a few days after Shevchenko’s arrival in town.
Genoa will host José Mourinho’s Roma at Marassi in Shevchenko’s first game in charge after the break on November 21.
The former Ukraine international was coached by Mourinho for one season at Chelsea during his playing career.
