The Spallini were without a home victory since September 17 and had managed just one win in their last 18 Serie A games.
“It was a great performance and we found ourselves again this evening,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“It had been too long since we’d won at home. The lads put in a performance that was above and beyond expectations, which was what they needed to beat a side like Roma. I congratulate my team.”
It is probably no coincidence that SPAL got back to winning ways on the day Manuel Lazzari returned from a long injury lay-off.
“He is a very important player for us, but tonight the whole team was consistent throughout the 90 minutes and we are very happy.
“We knew that we had to keep the ball and play out from the back, which wasn’t easy, but we showed a lot of quality. It was a really top level performance with character and determination. We did everything we needed for a game like this and must try to replicate it in future.
“Simone Missiroli had played as the midfield playmaker a few games ago and did it really well, so we continued working on that role. He is intelligent and we needed a more physical player there to contrast Roma’s characteristics.”
