Clarence Seedorf insists his “conscience is clear” after Milan’s defeat to Atalanta left Europa League hopes in tatters.

The Rossoneri’s chances of securing a top six finish are now extremely slim after a last-gasp 2-1 loss in Bergamo.

“This is a heavy defeat, as we had come here to win,” Seedorf told Sky Sport Italia.

“We did well in the second half, but Franco Brienza’s goal was stunning. Just a minute earlier we had almost scored with Mario Balotelli and deserved to net a second goal.

“There is certainly still hope for Europe because until a few months ago it had seemed impossible. Now we are battling.

“It’s a shame about this result, but we have to wait and see what happens in Torino-Parma. My lads gave their all and I cannot ask for more.”

Seedorf is widely expected to be fired, especially if the Rossoneri fail to qualify for Europe. How does he judge his tenure?

“I do not evaluate, I just think about finishing the season as best we can with this group. There will be time for the rest.

“I am giving my all, so my conscience is clear. I am concentrated on the final game.”

The match in Bergamo was also ruined by an ugly incident when Atalanta fans threw a banana at Kevin Constant, while Nigel De Jong and Philippe Mexes reacted with sarcastic applause.

“I can only compliment my lads because they continued playing,” said Seedorf.

“I don’t need to comment on the rest. Constant and his teammates reacted in the best way by carrying on with their work.”
