The Partenopei are without Juan Camilo Zuniga as the Colombian has a knee injury, while Faouzi Ghoulam will depart for the Africa Cup of Nations in January, leaving Rafael Benitez short of options on the left side of defence.

Dortmund are currently bottom of the Bundesliga, and Schmelzer’s agent admits that the player would relish a move to Napoli after making just two league starts for BVB this term.

“It’s possible we could see Schmelzer at Napoli,” revealed Gianluca Di Domenico of Robon, the agency which represents the 26-year-old.

“This is the time to make something happen, because Marcel wants to play. The Partenopei are a fantastic club but at the moment there’s been no contact either directly or through intermediaries.

“I don’t think a loan move would be viable, because if the player leaves Borussia he would do it permanently, and with a top destination secured.

“There’s no doubt that would include Napoli. [Naples] is a city where they live football, and Schmelzer wouldn’t say no.

“But I repeat, there has been no definite contact so we can’t say there are negotiations taking place.

“However, if Benitez’s side are interested in Schmelzer now is the time to come forward and start negotiations.

“Borussia Dortmund are in last place and certainly not going through a good period.”
