Napoli Coach Maurizio Sarri calls Gonzalo Higuain “the best striker in the world” and lauds his “special group”.

The Argentine forward has been on fire this season, with 16 goals and two assists in his 17 Serie A games so far.

“He’s sensitive, and up until now has projected an image which isn’t in line with his character,” Sarri explained in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.

“He’s not only the best striker in the world, but a man with genuine feelings. In the second half in Bergamo [against Atalanta] he responded with a double and I could feel all the lads sharing in it.

“I have to say, I guide a special group.

“Gonzalo can be a bit sensitive, and it shows, but it’s enough to touch the right chord. A champion of his ability sometimes just needs to feel close to those around him.

“Insigne too, came to me after the goal in Verona, there’s harmony between us. I hold my lads in high esteem.”

Sarri was less forthcoming when asked what the Partenopei will do in the January transfer window.

“I don’t deal with these things, I’m a man of the pitch. I have to coach and try to do it well.”

The Coach has also been critical of the winter break, and explained his reasoning to the sports newspaper.

“I’d rather play now, rather than some midweek where we have clogged-up weeks and it costs us in terms of hard work and sacrifice.

“On the other hand, they play elsewhere. It’s a contradiction that could be removed.”
