Former Juventus striker Paolo Rossi recalls the Heysel Stadium disaster – ‘we should not have played’.
The tragedy, the 30th anniversary of which is on Friday, occurred when Liverpool fans broke through a fence at the European Cup Final, with 39 Bianconeri killed in the crush that resulted as fans retreated.
Despite rioting in the stands and around the pitch, the game went ahead, with the Old Lady winning 1-0 and taking home their first European Cup, later re-named the Champions League.
