Italy midfielder Fausto Rossi insists “we couldn’t have done anything more” after a 4-2 European Under-21 Championship Final defeat to Spain.
“I don’t think the game changed because of the penalty, but what did weigh on us was the fact we didn’t make the most of Alessandro Florenzi’s chance,” Rossi told Rai Sport.
“Straight after that, we conceded on the counter-attack. We played a good game and leave with our heads held high.
“Of course there are regrets, but at the same time we are aware that we couldn’t have done anything more. We proved that we are a great squad and only deserve applause after this tournament.
“Everyone knew Spain were an amazing side, but we gave our all and cannot do more than that.”
The Azzurrini were in the game until Thiago Alcantara completed his hat-trick with a dubious penalty.
“On the tackle, he got the ball first and then touched Tello afterwards, who was already slipping over. In any case, we aren’t going to cling to incidents.”
