The Italian-American had been continuing his post-knee surgery treatment in New York and flew in to Florence this evening to begin training with his new team.

He was meant to arrive this afternoon, but was held up in Frankfurt and forced to miss two flights. The first was due to his delay leaving America amid heavy snow, while for the second Rossi was blocked at customs and fined for carrying electronic equipment.

“Frankfurt airport sucks!” was his brief yet telling comment on Twitter.

“Finally I am here and I’m very happy,” said Rossi when he eventually arrived in Florence at around 17.00 GMT.

“Now I want to sleep for a bit, but after that I can’t wait to get on to the pitch tomorrow and train. I feel good and will see all my teammates tomorrow.

“I am happy to be in the squad and work alongside them for the last few months of the season. I will stay here until April 4, then return after my check-up with the specialist. I hope Fiorentina will have a great end to the campaign.”

It has been reported that Rossi could return to the field before the end of the season, though he has not played since October 2011 and snapped the same knee ligament twice.

“When will I be playing again? We’ll see, we’re taking it slow. At this moment I am thinking about my knee and the recovery, then I’ll think about a partnership with Stevan Jovetic.

“I am enthusiastic and cannot wait to give the team a helping hand as soon as possible. I’m happy to be here.”

Italy Coach Cesare Prandelli also stated he was waiting for Rossi’s return and would hold a place for him in the squad.

“I am pleased that Prandelli is waiting for me, though I am waiting for my knee…”
