Former Roma striker Gervinho says the club was wrong to sack Coach Rudi Garcia: 'The team was doing all right'.

The Ivorian striker was crucial to the Giallorossi's offence under the French Coach, but he left the team in January 2016, shortly after his mentor was sacked.

“That sacking precipitated things,” he told L'Equipe. “I was surprised, I thought there was every good reason out there for him to complete the season.

“That sacking precipitated things,” he told L'Equipe. “I was surprised, I thought there was every good reason out there for him to complete the season.

“In spite of everything that people said, the team wasn't doing so badly. We were in a sufficiently good position to aim for any objective.

“Rudi is more than a Coach for me. He's the one who fought to take me to Roma. I could have stayed after his departure. The club wanted to keep me, but I told the directors that I needed to find some peace of mind and that it was best not to stay for me.

“When they terminated his contract, it was as though they elegantly terminated mine too. I could no longer stay.”

Finally, Gervinho discussed his new contract in China, where he plays for the club Hebei Fortune.

“I can't lie about this. They made me an extremely important offer.”
