Roma are attempting a complicated operation to sign Twente's Hakim Ziyech, whilst targeting Tottenham Hotspur's Federico Fazio.

Coach Luciano Spalletti's famous predilection for wingers over pure strikers is leading sporting director Walter Sabatini to look for players capable of covering that role.

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, his latest target is Twente's Ziyech, but his offer of €8m was rejected. In a convoluted twist, Sabatini is therefore attempting to send to the Dutch club the player Ismail H'Maidat on loan, owned by Roma after picking them up from Brescia.

H'Maidat is a product of Twente's youth team and his loan would be seen as a return home, but the move is expected to act as an opener for the signing of Ziyech.

Sabatini is also considering Tottenham's Fazio for the defence, as the deal for Real Madrid's Nacho appears to have fallen through.

The player is an Argentine with an Italian passport, and he was loaned to Sevilla in the second half of the previous season. He might find more space with the Lupi than back with the English team.
