According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Samassekou is valued at €18m by the Austrian club. He was linked with a possible transfer to Milan earlier in the summer.
However, the Italian daily reports that Roma are reluctant to pay any more than €15m, given that the player’s contract expires in just one year.
Although relatively unknown outside Austria, Gazzetta describes Samassekou as an all-action midfielder who specialises in winning the ball back from the opposition.
He has four caps for his native Mali and has made 91 appearances for Red Bull since joining in 2016 – helping the club win two Austrian Bundesliga titles and one Austrian Cup.
