“It is my Serie A debut, but it’s good being up against Ivan Juric again,” he said of the former Crotone Coach who he beat to first place in Serie B last season.

“I am curious, full of enthusiasm and motivation for this new adventure in the top flight. Aside from looking at systems, our team has solid foundations to build on so we can challenge everyone.

“I hope this can be a starting point for something great. I will evaluate the players in every sense and not just their fitness levels.

“Genoa are a very tough opponent and play great football. On home turf, they experience games in a different way, too. We must do well to attack and defend at the right moments. When we don’t have the ball, that’s when we must work even harder.

“Last season we learned to read the various moments of the game and I hope that’s still the case.”

Marco Borriello is in the squad and expected to start after he scored four goals in the 5-1 Coppa Italia victory this week.

Cagliari squad for Genoa: Colombo, Rafael, Storari; Bruno Alves, Capuano, Ceppitelli, Krajnc, Isla, Murru, Pisacane, Salamon; Deiola, Di Gennaro, Ionita, Munari, Padoin, Pajac; Borriello, Giannetti, Sau
