Verona President Maurizio Setti says it would be ‘pointless to sack’ Fabio Pecchia now, with the club virtually doomed to relegation.
The Scaligeri were all but consigned to the drop this afternoon after a 3-1 home defeat to rivals SPAL left them seven points off safety with just nine left to play for.
“Unfortunately the field of play decides things. Today, for the umpteenth time we failed against a direct rival,” Setti said after Verona’s fourth successive defeat.
“We haven’t played well against our direct rivals, but we have done things in the best way we could.
“Pecchia has taken forward his project, it’s useless to change him now as there are only three matches of the season remaining.”
Despite protests from Scaligeri fans throughout the season, Setti explained that he is reluctant to fire Coaches.
“I honestly have a philosophy regarding Coaches – I don’t think it makes a lot of sense to change.
“If the dressing room abandons him then I would. I have done it once in my time as President, the boss has always shown great desire.
“History shows that it doesn’t always go well when you change Coach. The responsibility is also mine.”
With two of Verona’s last three matches at Milan and Juventus, they are all but certain to make an instant return to Serie B.
“We have all made mistakes, looking at the past today isn’t helpful.
“We need to reorganise, the important thing is that the club is healthy.
“I am sorry for the fans, they have protested from the first day and I find it absurd.
“We need to build the future and it is right to take forward our project.”
