Players’ Association President Damiano Tommasi is open to reducing Serie A from 20 to 18 teams.
The idea has been floated around for several months and is gaining traction, as the Italian top flight used to have 16 teams from 1967 to 1988.
It increased to 18 sides in 1988, then to 20 in 2004, after which Serie A clubs have struggled in European competition.
“A reduction in the number of teams can be agreed if it is accompanied by the right solidity of the clubs,” said AIC President Tommasi today.
The plan has already been floated by Lega Serie A President Maurizio Beretta, as it would make the League more competitive and the fixture list less crammed.
