Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin has offered a full apology after offensive comments to Frosinone fans.

The Italian international is currently sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury, and got into an argument with some Canarini fans on social media.

There is a local rivalry, as Perin is from Latina, just an hour away from Frosinone.

However, during the exchanges the ‘keeper made reference to the Marocchinate, a term applied to women who were victims of the mass rape and killings committed during World War II after the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy.

Perin told a fan "your grandfather speaks Arabic" after abuse on social media.

Italian victims associations allege that 60,000 women, ranging in age from 11 to 86, suffered from violence by the Moroccan Goumiers in 1944.

“I apologise to everyone I offended with my completely out of place comments, which I regret,” Perin wrote on his Instagram profile.

“I wrongly referred to historical facts, not being aware of their tragic gravity. In a period which isn’t easy for me on a professional level, I didn’t have the calmness to avoid reacting to a series of continuous and serious provocations aimed at me and my family.

“All this, of course, is not an excuse because I know I was wrong on every level and I take full responsibility.

“The disappointment is even greater because my attitude did not reflect the values I believe in and try to pursue.”
