Mattia Perin hopes the competition for the role of Italy goalkeeper after Gigi Buffon will be “healthy and improve everyone.”
The Genoa goalkeeper’s future has been up in the air over the last few days, as he is wanted by the likes of Juventus and Napoli.
He also faces a battle with Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma to take over the Italy gloves.

“I am not anyone’s heir,” insisted Perin during a sponsorship event. “I hope to challenge for the Nazionale jersey and know there are many strong goalkeepers, but I think this much competition will be healthy and improve everyone.
“I hope that I had a good enough campaign to warrant being called up by Italy and, if so, will try to prove my worth.”
Buffon said he won’t be there for next month’s friendly against the Netherlands in Turin.
“Buffon is still deciding whether or not to retire and it’s purely up to him. I don’t think anyone else should put their oar in, because someone with his class can decide to stop whenever he wants to.
