Former Cagliari and Juventus player Fabian O’Neill ‘needs a liver transplant’ after an endless struggle against alcoholism.
The former Uruguay international's daughter, Martina, revealed that her father was in critical condition and hospitalised in Montevideo. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, she has claimed he ‘won’t make it if he doesn’t stop drinking'.
The newspaper claims the doctors have said O’Neill reacted well physically and could be discharged in the next few days, but his situation ‘is serious and the liver is now compromised by alcohol abuse’.
Many former teammates, including Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane, has reached out to help him cover the costs of the rehabilitation programme.
“He needs a transplant,” said Martina, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. “But if he doesn’t stop drinking, he won’t be able to make it.”
The Uruguayan of Irish heritage played for Cagliari from 1995-2000, moving to Juventus in 2000-02 and had a six-month stint at Perugia.
