Italy reached another terrifying record with 475 deaths from the coronavirus over the last 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 2,978.

The lockdown covering the entire country has not yet started to show improvements in the figures, which are simply staggering.

It means that in the last 48 hours alone, 820 people have died in Italy after contracting COVID-19.

The figure of 475 deaths in 24 hours is not only a one-day record in Italy, but in the world from this particular illness, as even at the peak of the crisis, China never registered so many fatalities.

There are 28,710 people currently suffering from the illness, with 4,025 who have fully recovered.

Since the pandemic began last month, Italy has seen 35,713 positive tests.

Lombardy remains by far the epicentre of the pandemic, as another 319 people died in that region over the last 24 hours, taking their total to 1,959.

On March 17, the death toll in Italy stood at 2,503 and there were 2,060 in intensive care.

Those numbers on March 18 have surged to 2,978 fatalities and 2,257 in intensive care.
