Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is surprised by reports that they are close to signing Wesley Sneijder.

Stories coming out of Italy and England are suggesting that United are on the verge of doing a €39m deal for the Dutchman.

However, speaking with ESPN Soccernet Press Pass, the Old Trafford manager denied the claims.

"I keep reading about this, but there's absolutely nothing at all to the reports," he stated. "First of all I don't think Inter are prepared to sell him anyway.

"You get conjecture and you get speculation every week in newspapers unfortunately," he continued.

"We have to answer these for some reason – why, I don't know, but we have to find a reason without adding insult to any particular club, or embarrassing any particular player.

"There's nothing we can do about it."

Sneijder's future has been placed into doubt after 3-4-3 tactician Gian Piero Gasperini replaced Leonardo on the Inter bench.

Inter transfer guru Marco Branca did insist earlier this week that the Dutch international was not for sale.

The 27-year-old joined Inter in 2009 from Real Madrid and is tied to the Meazza outfit until June 2015.

Should Inter sell, they would then be expected to reinvest Sneijder's fee – possibly to net Javier Pastore of Palermo.

The club are also again being linked with Sao Paulo ace Casemiro.
