Genoa boss Davide Nicola says his side should be referred to “as Genoa 2.0” and that being honest with players works. “Discussion is always the best resource.”

The Rossoblu held high-flying Atalanta to a 2-2 draw last weekend, and welcome Cagliari to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, with kick off at 14:00 GMT. You can read the match preview here.

“We are already improving, we’re doing some things very well, whilst there are other things we have to work on,” said Nicola in his press conference.

“We are thinking as a team in the face of certain situations. The improvement must be an important step for Genoa 2.0. We have 1500-1600 minutes left of the season, and you would like to think we can make improvements.

“Since Genoa belongs to everyone, we will all contribute with self-sacrifice.”

The Rossoblu earned an impressive draw against Atalanta last weekend, and Nicola says he enjoyed it.

“I had fun in the first half in Bergamo. We need to find ways to make the difference. Cagliari have a certain way of playing, and they play good football.”

The Sardinians haven’t won in the league for two months, and their flying start to the season is slowing down, but Nicola says they must be respected.

“Every team has strengths and weaknesses, Cagliari are in the top seven in the table and this means that they got consistent results, we also seek consistency, through performances.

“We have to admire our opponents, but also know that if we play as we did in the first half against Atalanta, we can cause problems.”

Genoa’s players have appreciated Nicola’s direct-approach method to coaching.

“I don’t see any particular merit in this. Discussion is always the best resource for everything. Those who flee confrontation are not very sure of themselves.

“For me, working here and with these guys is rewarding.”

Iago Falque signed from Torino in the final week of the transfer window, and Nicola states that physically the winger is in good condition.

“Falque is in good condition from a certain point of view, but a facet that could be improved is regarding integrating him into the team. Only time will tell.”
