The Nerazzurri allowed the Cameroon international to sign for Russian outfit Anzhi and they’ve struggled without him.
The squad was then potentially further weakened in January after Thiago Motta was granted a move to Paris Saint-Germain.
“I think the sale of Eto’o took a lot away from the team,” the Brazilian-born Italian international told the Gazzetta dello Sport.
“He was someone who could always make the difference. His sale did have a part to play in my decision to leave.
“It’s true that they have now rediscovered Diego Milito who is a real danger when he is in form. He’s a dangerous weapon, but Inter would have had one more with Eto’o.”
Inter had initially convinced Motta to remain in Milan until the end of the season, until he changed his mind just days before the winter window closed.
“I told President Massimo Moratti that my cycle at Inter had ended,” continued the former Barcelona and Genoa man.
“The time had arrived for me to breath new air because I’m the kind of guy who needs fresh challenges in order to progress.”
