Verona and Greece international Vangelis Moras donated bone marrow to his brother and urged others to help “save a life.”
The 32-year-old defender flew out to Australia over the summer when learning his older brother Dimitris had been hospitalised with acute myeloid leukaemia.
“When they did the test, I already knew I was compatible with my brother. I felt it,” he told the Serie A TIM website.
“The doctors gave me the time to finish the season and the World Cup, then I flew straight from Brazil to Australia. I basically haven’t stopped.
“I was attached to a machine for five hours as it removed stem cells and in 15 minutes they took those cells to re-infuse them into my brother.
“Donation is no trouble, everyone needs to learn that. Everyone has to realise how easy it is to save a life.”
His Verona teammates celebrated his gesture by walking on to the field in a friendly match wearing Superman shirts.
“#SaveMoras There are no superheroes, just real men. Forza Dmitris’ was the message on the back.
