The Viola rattled the woodwork twice, but were beaten 1-0 in stoppages by a Pablo Daniel Osvaldo header.
“It’s a bitter defeat, as we were fighting for a very important third place finish. I compliment the lads on an excellent performance and it’s so disappointing because Fiorentina did not deserve to lose,” said the Coach.
There were penalty appeals when Daniele De Rossi appeared to handle in the box, but the referee only awarded a corner.
“I don’t talk about referees. De Rossi? He did move towards the ball… In any case, let’s not get fossilised into one single incident. There are games with a certain story and this seemed like the photocopy of our Coppa Italia game.
“The team gave its all, but this is football. Tomorrow we begin all over again.”
That Champions League spot is now wide open, as Milan are a point in front of Fiorentina with a game in hand against Torino, while Roma are only four adrift of the Rossoneri.
“A lot depends on Milan, as they still have to play and win,” noted Montella. “If they draw tomorrow, then we’ll be only two points behind them.”
Fiorentina have confirmed they are interested in signing Osvaldo from Roma, so to see him score tonight was a bitter blow.
“Now he’s worth even more…”
