Vincenzo Montella insists “even a draw would’ve been disappointing after that performance” and Fiorentina could have done no more in a 1-0 home loss to Lecce.

“Congratulations to Lecce, because any newly-promoted team that wins away deserves applause,” Montella told DAZN.
“We had 19 shots on goal compared to six, we created constant chances, played in attack the whole time without managing to find the net.
“After conceding the goal, we got a little frenetic and that was the only issue in my view. We expected to win considering the performance, the lads gave every last drop of sweat and I am proud they can hold their heads up high.”
Franck Ribery went off with an ankle injury at half-time, making way for Kevin-Prince Boateng, as Federico Chiesa was already out of action.
“I don’t know how he’s feeling. It was a very tough blow to his ankle, he was upset at not being able to continue the game. I saw the right attitude and desire to win from everyone, so all I can do is thank them. Even a draw would’ve felt disappointing after that performance, but that’s football for you.
“We can be more determined in the box, understand to put more bodies into the box when so many crosses are coming in, but with this temperament, I doubt the positive results will be delayed for long.
“Gabriel performed heroics in goal, especially on Dusan Vlahovic.”
Fiorentina were jeered off the field after their third consecutive defeat, fuelling rumours Montella could soon be fired.
“We played well and I don’t know what more we could’ve done. This is football. Dissent in a civilised fashion is to be accepted.”
