Vincenzo Montella says Fiorentina’s work on the pitch will determine if they can challenge for the Scudetto.

La Viola have looked to follow up last season’s fourth place finish by strengthening ahead of preseason in the transfer window.

A title bid was proposed to their Coach at the team’s first training session back ahead of the new term.

“The fans are right to dream,” Montella reflected to reporters.

“Certainly on the pitch we will be able to tell if this team can repeat the results of last season.

“We are aware that it will all be all the more difficult.”

The club are close to completing a deal for Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez.

“I will talk about Mario Gomez when he is here. His arrival is 99 per cent there, but I think it lacks the certainty and at the moment I do not believe that Fiorentina have him officially.

“Let’s talk about set things, he is known to be a great player, is well liked and appreciated.”

Montella was prompted for comment on other transfer rumours at the moment surrounding Fiorentina, including reputed interest from Milan in Adem Ljajic.

“Teams can always improve, we always want the best and the most. Let’s get one piece at a time, for example, Mario Gomez, and then we’ll talk about the others.

“How have I found Ljajic? A little fatter.”
