Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora announced there is “an extraordinary plan for sport to resume from May,” as Italy eye an easing of lockdown measures due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The lockdown has been extended to Easter Monday, April 13, with a new Government decree last night banning training in facilities even for professional athletes.
It does still fit in with FIGC President Gabriele Gravina’s comments that Serie A is hoping to resume from May 20.
“There will be an extraordinary plan for sport to resume from May,” added Minister for Sport Spadafora today.
“That is when we hope to be out of the coronavirus emergency and can start thinking about the future. However, in order for us to resume in May, we need all the sporting groups to have the necessary resources.
“This is why we have called a meeting of the Presidents representing five biggest sporting federations, encouraging suggestions on how the Government can help the sporting world in the way it has been affected by this health crisis.
“There are 10 important and complicated days ahead of us. We need that extra sacrifice to protect our athletes and that is why we banned all training in sporting structures.”
The number of new deaths, cases and intensive care requirements has been slowing significantly in Italy over the last few days, but remains painfully high nonetheless.
There were 727 deaths on Tuesday, taking the total to 13,155, with an increase of only 12 people into intensive care over a 24-hour period.
