“I have great admiration for Empoli, but despite the injuries, I believe we are superior and can win,” said the Coach in his Press conference.
“We could’ve come into this game in a better position and it’s purely our own fault, because we’ve thrown some results away. We’ve got the quality to do well and know how to hurt Empoli. If we lose, it must be because the other team earns it.
“When there are difficulties, we must remain cool-headed and concentrated. This is why I ask the more experienced players to take the team in hand.”
When asked about Maxi Lopez’s condition, Mihajlovic’s response was typically forthright.
“He’s in bad shape. I thank him because he grit his teeth to play against Atalanta, but I spoke to Maxi the other day and told him if a player manages to do things with an extra 7kg, which is like carrying a washing machine, imagine what he can do when in good shape.
“The reason he gets injured is because he’s overweight and the training we do hurts him. He has to lose weight.
“The first person who should be angry is him. He needs to lose weight or he won’t play. This isn’t the Maxi I know and who I had at Catania and Sampdoria.
“He is on a special diet and knows that every week he needs to lose 1kg. He has to do it. Every week he’ll be weighed and we’ll see if he’s lost 1kg. If he has, good, if not then he will hear from me.
“Tomorrow Lucas Boyé will play, above all because we’ve got no other options. He has quality and hunger, so I believe in him.”
Mihajlovic is suspended after he was sent off for dissent in the 2-1 defeat to Atalanta.
“It doesn’t seem fair. I swore in Bergamo, but only after the red card. Before it was just an instinctive gesture, kicking the water bottle, but again I promised myself to ignore the referees.”
