“Milan have their defects, certainly, but we really haven’t been lucky this season.
“This evening it wasn’t just three points at stake, but also our pride and our honour. We didn’t want to lose face again. We can hold our heads high, having played on level terms with Juve.
“I saw hunger, character and intensity. Gigi Buffon needed two or three great saves and he made the difference. We must continue with this determination, as the psychological aspect has always been our real problem.”
The team was in a training retreat for six days after the loss to Atalanta and there were certainly improvements.
“The retreat can be useful once, but not all the time. I did it to send a signal. We needed time to talk, confront each other and identify the problems. After the last confrontation, we saw the results this evening.
“This performance does give us confidence going into the next games and the Coppa Italia Final. The important thing we learned is it’s a psychological issue. If we play like this against clubs behind us in the table, we’ll win.”
Mario Balotelli was given a rare start and impressed, providing the assist for Alex’s goal, hitting the crossbar and forcing some great Buffon saves.
“Mario had a rough start, but then gained confidence and did well. He lost intensity over time, as did Juraj Kucka and Riccardo Montolivo. Unfortunately I was forced into two substitutions.
“Mario and Carlos Bacca did great dirty work today, forcing Juve to only focus on long balls. I confirm, we did not deserve to lose.
“I spoke to Max Allegri after the game and he admitted it should’ve been a draw.”
