Giandomenico Mesto did consider leaving Napoli during the summer amid fears that he would struggle for games.
The Italian was used in just 23 matches last season by previous boss Walter Mazzarri and he did attract interest on the transfer market.
“At the start of the season I didn’t think that I would find that much space in the team,” the wide man, who can play in defence and midfield, told Radio Kiss Kiss.
“But the new Coach and the club immediately made it clear that they had faith in my abilities.”
Mesto, three appearances so far this season, was named in the starting XI by new boss Rafa Benitez for their 2-1 win at Milan on Sunday night.
“Mesto did think about moving because he wanted regular games,” agent Moreno Roggi told Radio CRC. “However, staying at Napoli was a great move because Benitez has given him his backing.”
Mesto, capped three times by Italy, has played for Reggina, Cremonese, Fermana, Udinese and Genoa in his career.
