It’s not a new link, but the difference now is that Mertens has dropped down the pecking order under Carlo Ancelotti.
The Belgian will be 32 in May and his current contract is due to expire in June 2020, with no sign of negotiations for an extension.
Mertens was purchased from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2013 for a bargain price of €9.5m.
