The first leg of the Champions League play-off was at the Stadio San Paolo this evening, decided by a Mertens goal and Jorginho penalty.
“It was very important, the team gave its all and the packed stadium was wonderful,” the Belgian told Mediaset Premium.
“I think 2-0 isn’t enough, it isn’t bad either, but considering the overall game, it was too little to show for our performance.”
Mertens was substituted to make way for Arek Milik after 75 minutes and was visibly irritated, shaking his head.
“I wanted to do something important for the team and there was a long way to go yet.
“I love our style of football, it allows me to get a lot of touches and I will admit I was disappointed when I saw the board come up with my number. I know Milik has to play too, but Nice were weakened and I wanted to run at them some more.
“I stayed here because we play beautiful football and I want to continue that.”
