Roma captain Francesco Totti may be 36, but Carlo Mazzone is convinced he can still do a job for Italy.
Azzurri boss Cesare Prandelli yesterday suggested that he would consider Totti for World Cup 2014 selection and Mazzone, a former Giallorossi boss, thinks that is only natural.
“Francesco is still in excellent physical shape,” the 76-year-old told Sky Sport Italia on Tuesday morning. “He may be getting older, but the substance is still there and he is still a great player.
“Prandelli is a well prepared tactician who is doing well, he observes everything and makes the right choices.
“When the time to make that decision comes then Prandelli will do so.”
Totti will be almost 38 when the next World Cup takes place, but he’s impressed at the Stadio Olimpico again this term.
“I compliment Totti for the way he behaves off the pitch, because without that a 36-year-old wouldn’t still be on the field of play,” Mazzone added.
Totti hasn’t appeared for his country since the 2006 World Cup Final which was won on penalties against France.
