Alessandro Matri “needed a moment like this” after scoring a brace on his Fiorentina debut, but is already injured.

The striker only completed his loan move from Milan this week and made the perfect debut, scoring twice and providing an assist in the 3-0 victory away to Catania.

“I went off at half-time due to a slight calf problem and we need some tests tomorrow to evaluate the extent of it,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“I hadn’t experienced a moment like this for a while and to be honest I really needed it. I wanted to become a protagonist again and after such a tough time you lose your sense of balance. Only my girlfriend and those closest to me know what I’ve gone through.

“The first goal was from a move that Fiorentina often attempt, while on the second I was fortunate and smart to believe in it.”

Matri has already scored more goals for Fiorentina in half a game than he did for Milan in the entire first half of the season.

“Over six months I struggled to settle into Milan’s tactics and there were various problems at the club. I am 29 years old and still a bit young to be on the bench.

“Why did I choose Fiorentina? They had the Number 32 free! There were other options, but this team plays in a very attacking way and there are many fascinating elements here.”
