The Nerazzurri are in crisis, falling to 13th place in Serie A and crashing out of the Coppa Italia to a 93rd-minute Gonzalo Higuain strike.
“I am speechless,” the Coach told Rai Sport after tonight’s 1-0 loss at the Stadio San Paolo.
“You can’t concede a goal like that. You just can’t! It was over, there were 30 seconds left. It was a fine performance until then, but you have to score goals and not concede. Instead we concede every time.”
Extra time had seemed inevitable, but Andrea Ranocchia was surprised by a Faouzi Ghoulam throw-in and Higuain did the rest.
“We have only one thing to say: we are fools. We play well enough, but then are fools and go in far too sluggishly at times. Conceding a goal like that is truly absurd, isn’t it?
“The Argentine was clever and experienced, as he figured out first where the ball would go and started his run, but there were five of us against one, so we really cannot concede a goal like that.”
It’s a particularly heavy blow, as just reaching the Final could well be enough to secure a place in Europe next season.
“I can’t even remember the last time I lost three games in a row. It must be at least 10 years ago.
“Puscas did great work, I am happy for him and Santon, the same for Brozovic. I am very happy with that.
“I am truly distraught about the goal, but happy because we have become a team. We are playing football, which we also did against Sassuolo and lost because of mistakes. Tonight’s mistake was truly shocking.”
