Christian Maggio feels Italy’s opening draw with Spain was “very good for our self-esteem” going into games with Croatia and the Republic of Ireland.

The Azzurri began their Euro 2012 adventure with a 1-1 result against the reigning World and European champions on Sunday.

“The match with Spain was very good for our self-esteem,” said wing-back Maggio.

“We started the Euros on the right foot and that is a good sign that things have changed since our friendly defeat to Russia.

“We did so well to take the lead and if Spain hadn’t equalised straight away then we could’ve taken home the three points.

“Now we have to think about Croatia, who are a completely different team to Spain and very strong physically.”
