However, after Marcelo Bielsa refused to turn up, Simone Inzaghi has taken the Aquile to fifth in Serie A, just a point off the Champions League places.

“Together we win, united we win,” Lotito said at Lazio’s Christmas dinner.

“There’s a small victory that we’ve already achieved: having brought people back to the stadium.

“This is a credit to the team and their performances, their desire on the pitch that their attitude shows, strong-willed with a spirit of sacrifice and great humility which means a lot to the fans: today they are proud of their team.

“I’ve had a lot of compliments about the team from my colleagues in sporting institutions, because they see a squad which has something different.

“Beyond the technical qualities, which are undeniable, there’s something which feeds the spirit of this group and brings incredible results.

“You can see that when I say we win together, it’s not a cliché. It’s a reality, unity is strength and unity comes from the team, the Coach and his staff, the shop workers, the physios and especially the fans.

“If we’re all pulling in the same direction then we’ll bring great satisfaction to everyone. I’ve seen performances achieved not with physical strength, but with the heart.

“This is a team which doesn’t only believe in its own ability, but fights on the pitch in the name of the historical values of this glorious club.

“We believe in what we do, and we do it in the name of those values. Merry Christmas, and I hope the team can continue in this manner, which is winning.

“If we stay united, we’ll be able to take great satisfaction away from this year.”
