Cagliari Coach Diego Lopez says whether he continues in his role is ‘down to the club’ after a 4-1 defeat at Sampdoria.
Today’s heavy loss, coupled with wins for both Crotone and SPAL, means the Sardi are now only two points above the relegation zone with three matches remaining of the season.
And speaking post-match at Marassi, Lopez admitted things ‘cannot go on’ as they are.
“We played a poor first half, it was a poor performance,” the Uruguayan, whose side have won only twice in their last 12 matches, commented.
“We can’t move forward like this. Even though we did better in the second half, it didn’t matter.
“We need to say sorry to our fans and find the strength for a difficult match against Roma next week.
“It’s pointless to say anything other than the responsibility is mine. That’s how it is and you know it.
“You can lose against Samp. They are a great team, but we put in a first half performance that was too bad to be true.”
Lopez was asked whether he feels his position is under threat, with Cagliari now perilously close to the drop zone.
“The Coach’s position is always up for discussion, but that is something that is down to the club.
“We will all go back to Cagliari together.”
