Liverpool already snapped up Philippe Coutinho and are reportedly planning a similar deal for Inter’s Mateo Kovacic.

The 19-year-old midfielder is a first choice for Croatia at this summer’s World Cup, but is struggling to get a game at San Siro under Walter Mazzarri.

He has had only eight Serie A starts this season and was used as a substitute 17 times, often with very little time to make his mark.

According to Metro, Liverpool are hoping to take advantage of the situation with an offer worth £8m this summer.

“The Coach decides who plays when,” agent Nikky Vuksan told calciomercato this week. “He decides who is in better shape and who needs to work a bit harder.

“Obviously Mateo is not happy about playing so little, but what player is? All I can say is that he has a contract with Inter, that is all.”

Arsenal and Tottenham have also been linked with Kovacic, whose playing time has been further reduced with the January arrival of Hernanes for €20m.

However, Liverpool would likely have to raise their offer, because Inter paid just under £10m to sign Kovacic from Dinamo Zagreb in January 2013.
