Fabio Liverani admits Lecce made it too easy for Roma in their 4-0 defeat. “We gifted two goals, they were like a shark that could smell blood.”
The Salentini had won three Serie A games on the bounce before this setback at the Stadio Olimpico, conceding two goals in each half.
“I believe there are numerous clubs in the relegation race, not just us and the two from Genoa,” Liverani told Sky Sport Italia.

“Those on 27-28 points are hardly miles away, so I think it’ll be a pretty big cluster of teams battling it out there. People thought we were doomed three weeks ago, then assumed we were safe. This is a team with strengths and weaknesses, but today we showed too many of the latter and too few of the former.
“Roma are of a very high level and we made mistakes that gifted at least two goals. A defeat at the Olimpico can happen, but not like that with our errors handing them these goals.
“They have infinite quality, so were like a shark that could smell blood.”
Gianluca Lapadula’s volley off the inside of the boot struck the far post in Lecce’s best chance of the game.
“I felt we had two or three clear chances in the first half too, Chris Smalling got back well for the interception. Gianluca Mancini also made an acrobatic interception on the ball floated over the top.
“You cannot think of coming to the Olimpico with 10 chances to score. Incidents change games and a side like Roma that goes 2-0 up, then you don’t take your chances, it’s not going to end well.
“There are some very difficult, perhaps even unthinkable, games coming up, but football shows us we can achieve anything on our day.”
