Roma split with Franco Baldini, but are closing on Coach Rudi Garcia after Lille confirmed he could leave.

It has been an eventful day for the Giallorossi, who sold Maarten Stekelenburg to Fulham for €5.6m and announced director general Baldini had left the club by mutual consent.

Laurent Blanc had seemed to be ready to sign, but talks hit problems and it’s reported they are looking elsewhere.

“We are taking a little time to take stock of the situation,” said Lille director general Frederic Paquet on 10Sport.

“Rudi Garcia is under contract with Lille and we have started working with him for next season, but there are discussions that are on-going.

“After five years of working together and failing to qualify for the Champions League, it is only natural for everyone to take some time to think things over.”

Garcia is known to be first choice for Roma director of sport Walter Sabatini, but he expressed concern that they’d be seen to be gambling on a less famous name after two poor campaigns.
