Lucas Leiva admits he “didn’t think we’d be challenging for the Scudetto” and explains what sets Lazio apart from Juventus and Inter.
The 2-1 win over Inter allowed them to leapfrog into second place, just one point off leaders Juventus, with an unbeaten run now at 19 rounds.
“In all honest, I didn’t think we’d be challenging for the Scudetto,” Lucas Leiva told Globoesporte in Brazil.

“In all honest, I didn’t think we’d be challenging for the Scudetto,” Lucas Leiva told Globoesporte in Brazil.
“Our objective has always been to fight for Champions League qualification. Since I arrived at Lazio, the results have been very positive. Last year we won the Coppa Italia, now we are focused on the top four, but we’ll fight it out now that we’re up there.
“Juventus and Inter are the favourites, above all the Bianconeri have the experience of winning trophies and titles.”
While those two clubs are still trying to settle under new coaches Maurizio Sarri and Antonio Conte, Lazio are well-drilled with Simone Inzaghi.
“Our strength is that we’ve been working together continually for four years under Inzaghi. I’ve been at Lazio for three seasons, but in recent months we’ve been able to win the Coppa Italia and Italian Supercup, which is not easy,” continued Leiva.
“I didn’t think when leaving Liverpool that I’d adapt so quickly. I helped Liverpool to reach their current level and now I can help Lazio reach a very high level too.
“In any case, our objective remains Champions League qualification. We are in second place, two points ahead of Inter and one behind Juventus, but the imperative is to guarantee a top four finish.”
