The 33-year-old defender was out of contract when his deal with Fiorentina expired in June 2012, but has not played for 21 months.
“I had problems in August 2011 and tried to push through, but as time went on we realised the tendon injury could not be resolved without an operation.
“In June 2012 my contract with Fiorentina expired and I risked ending my career early because I hadn’t gone under the knife before, as for a year we didn’t understand the situation. That surgery was the last chance saloon.
“I am ready to play now. I thank the club for this opportunity and the faith they put in me. I am here to give the team a helping hand and it was tough to be out for so long.”
