Juventus have released a statement confirming ‘full support’ for Nicolò Fagioli as he begins the seven-month ban and treatment for gambling addiction, so could return for the final game of this season.
There was some confusion over when the ban would formally begin and therefore when he would be allowed back on the pitch.
The FIGC (Italian Football Federation) announced that it will start from today.
That means in theory Fagioli could return for the final game of the Serie A season when Juventus host Monza on May 26.
The plea bargain has been formalised in a seven-month ban from the field, as five months of the total 12-month sentence were commuted to treatment for gambling addiction and at least 10 public appearances to discourage others from falling into the same trap.
Meanwhile, Juventus have confirmed they will continue giving Fagioli his full salary and allow him to train with the squad at the Continassa camp, but he cannot take part in official games.
The FIGC has also fined him €12,500.
“The Club has noted the official press release from the FIGC n°177/AA and confirms its full support for Nicolò Fagioli in tackling this path, providing the player with the necessary support in carrying out the indicated therapeutic plan and, as expressly provided for in the agreement, collaborating with the Federation to outline the scheduled appointments.
“We are firmly convinced that Nicolò, with the support of the Club, his teammates, his family and the professionals who will assist him, will face the therapeutic and training process with a great sense of responsibility and, once the disqualification has been served, will be able to return to competing with due serenity.”
Reminds me of Paolo Rossi…
