Italy will go into tonight’s World Cup qualifier against Malta with history clearly on their side – especially at home.

The two teams have met four times so far and the Azzurri have won them all, scoring 15 and conceding two in the process.

Paired together in Euro ’88 qualifying, Italy won 2-0 in Valletta – despite Alessandro Altobelli missing two penalties – before smashing a handful past them in a 5-0 Bergamo win.

They were then placed in the same World Cup qualifying campaign for 1994. Italy won 2-1 away and 6-1 at home.

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini scored twice on that night in Palermo when Italy were coached by Arrigo Sacchi.
