Italy are the European champions after beating England on penalties in the EURO 2020 Final at Wembley. Check out Football Italia’s player ratings.
Gianluigi Donnarumma 8 – Couldn’t do much about the goal but was not really tested after that chance. A quiet night for the 22-year-old, who was mostly involved with his feet. Made one save and conceded one. But decided the game once again in the penalty shootout. Became the Player of the Tournament at the end of the match.
Giovanni Di Lorenzo 6.5 – Didn’t fully commit after leaving acres of space behind himself for Luke Shaw to pounce and score the quickest goal in the competition. An obvious weak link in this Italy squad since the match against Belgium and England continuously pushed to attack his side. But the defender worked tiredlessly as he has been since replacing Alessandro Florenzi in the first match.
Leonaro Bonucci 8.5 – Did well in the battles with Harry Kane and the other England attackers, but didn’t seem as convinced as in the previous games, as Italy struggled with creativity. Scored the equaliser in the second half and gave the Azzurri a great boost and to become the oldest goalscorer in a European Championship Final.
Giorgio Chiellini 7 – Where Harry Kane is, Giorgio Chiellini is. The captain continued to fight but initially struggled with the pacey England attackers. Celebrated every duel won as if he had scored a goal and continued to lead by example at the back.
Emerson Palmieri 6.5 – Felt like a big step down from Leonardo Spinazzola’s performances earlier in the competition, but he grew more confident as the game went on and eventually established himself into the team. He was better defensively than going forward. Limited by being one-footed. (Alessandro Florenzi N/A – Entered in extra time at left-back)
Nicolò Barella 6.5 – One of the fresher in the middle of the park, but lacked the creativity to help split up the compact England side (Bryan Cristante 6 – Entered to give the side another engine in the middle to battle against the English midfielders)
Jorginho 7.5 – The director suffered a knee problem in the first half and seemed to struggle for large periods, but then played his part as we know. Jorginho proved to be one of the best midfielders in European football during the competition and continued to do so in the Final. But the normally secure Brazilian-born midfielder missed his penalty in the shootout.
Marco Verratti 7 – The PSG midfielder’s pass accuracy was the best on the pitch, but never produced any of the magical movements or final passes that has made him one of the most important players in this Azzurri side. England did well to give him a stressful time, but Verratti grew more and more dominant in the middle. (Manuel Locatelli 6 – Not a bad replacement to have when Verratti struggled to finish the game)
Federico Chiesa 8 – The liveliest of the Italy players in the first half and produced some moments that scared the English but had to fight for space against a deep England defence. (Federico Bernardeschi 6.5 – Came on for an injured Chiesa and showed great determination and the usual confidence he displays with the Azzurri. A free kick effort that almost surprised Jordan Pickford and secure as always from the penalty spot in the shootout)
Ciro Immobile 5 – ‘Di nome, di fatto’. Immobile lived up to his name. Not present in the first half, stationary in attack and was not available for his teammates, who were in need of creative runs in behind the compact defence. (Domenico Berardi 6.5 – Replaced a weak Immobile and gave Italy an instant boost to give England more trouble with his movements)
Lorenzo Insigne 6.5 – The Napoli forward was struggling to find enough space to create any big chances in the Final. But he tried hard and contributed going forward, to give the English defence some headache at times. But the winger couldn’t produce the end product expected of him tonight. (Andrea Belotti 6 – Came on in extra time to spearhead the Azzurri. Fought hard up top, missed his penalty in the shootout.)
