“We tried everything, especially in the first half. We got tired after the break and could’ve done better, as Kevin Lasagna and Stefano Okaka were always dangerous on the counter,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“Rodrigo De Paul’s shot hit the post in stoppages, that was a scare, but we should’ve won this game. Nonetheless, we are close to getting Lazio into the Champions League for the first time since 1997 and we need to keep going to achieve that.
“We had a rough time after the restart with injuries, but take nothing away from these lads. They still won the Italian Super Cup, got back to challenging for the Scudetto until 10 games from the end and I couldn’t ask for much more.”
There were reports of a bitter row in the locker room, then President Claudio Lotito held a series of crisis meetings with players and staff.
“There’s been a lot of talk, but things were written that were overblown to create controversy. The President has always visited the training ground, it’s natural as the owner that he wants to know what’s happening, but when we play with the same men every three days, we lose the sharpness to finish chances and keep focused in defence. It’s inevitable.
“The likes of Tucu Correa, Adam Marusic and Senad Lulic would’ve been really useful in the last few games, but we didn’t have them at our disposal.”
