Simone Inzaghi is confident ahead of the start of a new Serie A campaign but insists that Inter still need a new signing to replace the injured Tajon Buchanan.

Inter coach Inzaghi spoke to Sky Sport Italia four days before the Nerazzurri’s debut in the new campaign against Genoa.

“The debut is much-awaited. We’ve been working well since July 13, and I am happy with the lads’ commitment,” the Italian tactician said.

Inter became Serie A champions for the 20th time in history last season and will look to defend their title in 2024-25.

The last four Scudetto winners failed to win the trophy again in the following season.

“Last season was marvellous, but we must put in even more effort this term,” Inzaghi admitted.

“It won’t be easy, but the lads have been extraordinary. We must try to improve, and we work every day to do this.

“We are Italy’s champions, so I want to see concentration. The defending champions struggled in the last few seasons, so we must focus on our targets. I gave my lads a few extra days off because I knew they had given me so much. There is optimism regarding our debut on Saturday.”

Inter have signed Piotr Zielinski, Mehdi Taremi and Josep Martinez in the 2024 summer transfer window, but Inzaghi is waiting for one more addition to complete the team.

Inzaghi insists Inter need one more summer signing

“The transfer window is open until the end of the month. There’s a gap in defence due to Buchanan’s injury,” he said.

“I am talking to the club and I have strong directors backing me. I’ve met the new owners and they are very ambitious, like us. President Marotta, Ausilio, Baccin, Zanetti and Ferri are here daily to talk. Let’s see if we can add something before the end [of the transfer window].”

Zielinski is recovering from a slight injury and could miss Inter’s first game against Genoa this weekend, while Stefan de Vrij will surely be forced to the sidelines.

“Zielinski has excellent technique. We wanted him, and he’ll surely help us a lot if not on Saturday, from the following game” said Inzaghi.

“Taremi has international experience and has scored many goals in his career. He has settled in well. Martinez is an excellent keeper with a great desire to learn. He can work with Sommer and he will give us satisfaction.”
