Following a captain’s performance for Inter against Lecce on Saturday evening, Nicolo Barella could soon be rewarded with a new and upgraded contract extension according to reports on Sunday morning.

The Nerazzurri maintained their four-point lead at the top of the Serie A table with a 2-0 win over Lecce, with Barella getting himself on the scoresheet after 78 minutes.

The 26-year-old was also entrusted with the captain’s armband in the absence of Lautaro Martinez, and led by example on the pitch at San Siro.

Now, La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Barella will almost certainly extend his contract with Inter by the end of the 2023-24 season.

The pink paper suggests that Lautaro is slightly further ahead in negotiations with the club over an extension, but there have already been informal conversations between the club and Barella’s representatives.

Barella’s current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2026, but with plenty of interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, Inter are keen to tie him down longer into the future.
