Former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi says the Nerazzurri have dropped too many points at important stages of the season.

The San Siro side won 2-1 away at Fiorentina on Saturday but the 50-year-old believes it is too late for them to salvage a Champions League spot.

“I was convinced by the side at the start of the season because the squad is one of quality,” Bergomi told FcInterNews.it.

“Unfortunately for various reasons the team has dropped too many points at the most important times.

“Eleven points is a lot to recover from but we saw what Milan did last season.

“The system they played against Fiorentina showed a more courageous Inter.

“I told Walter Mazzarri that the other night. It was good like that and they need to carry on playing like that.”

Bergomi, now a pundit for Italian television, also responded to criticism from Juventus fans about comments he made regarding the club’s involvement in the Calciopoli scandal.

“No one seems to like me,” he joked. “It gives me more motivation because it shows I’m doing my job well.

“People need to understand that when we are there we are trying to do our job and to be impartial.”
